SC7: Philosophy and Neuroscience of Free Will

Speakers

Michael Pauen and John-Dylan Haynes

Content

The problem of will is currently one of the most vigorously debated
issues both in philosophy and in neuroscience. Relevant questions
concern the compatibility of free will and determinism, the necessity
and existence of alternative possibilities, particularly in a
deterministic world, but also the consequence that follow from a
number of well known experiments. After providing an overview over the
classical philosophical positions, the course will present some more
recent approaches, and will then discuss relevant thought-provoking
experiments both in neuroscience and psychology.
